Lions take out 20th ranked Truman 3-2

Kirksville, Mo. -- Jeanna Feldmann and Renee Rheinecker both had 20 kills and the Lions had 16 team blocks as the Missouri Southern volleyball team defeated 20th ranked Truman State tonight in Kirksville, three games to two. Individual set scores were 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-10.

The win is the first for Missouri Southern (6-6, 1-2 MIAA) over a ranked opponent since the 2007 season when the Lions swept then 24th ranked West Florida at home.

Rheinecker and Feldmann both had 20 kills with Rheinecker hitting .354 for the match and Feldmann adding 11 digs. Kari Hammerbacher had a match-high 27 digs, while Elin Skei had a match-high 57 assists. Ashlee Russell had 12 kills and eight digs, while Brittany Vavao-Huggins added nine blocks.

The Lions hit .214 in the first set, but limited the Bulldogs (11-6, 2-3 MIAA) to a .000 attack average in the opener. Truman took sets two and three, before Southern returned the favor in the fourth set, winning 25-22, never trailing from the start to finish.

Seeing victory, Southern came alive in the fifth set, hitting .435 in the frame. The Lions led 8-4 at the turn and 10-5 at one point, before Truman cut the lead to two (11-9) forcing a Lions timeout. The lead was again two (12-10) before the Lions scored three straight points capped off by a match-ending kill from Rheinecker.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow when the Lions travel to St. Joseph to take on Missouri Western at 2 pm.
