FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team had two matches today at the Pittsburg State Classic and two very opposite results as the Lions swept Newman in the opener, but were swept in the nightcap by Abilene Christian. Southern (8-7) defeated Newman by the scores of 29-27, 25-15 and 25-22 in the opener. After a barnburner in the first set that went six extra points, the Lions settled down and dominated the Jets in the second set, hitting .419 as a team. Newman (4-12) hit much better in the third set, but the Lions came away with a 25-22 win. Jeanna Feldmann had a double-double, her third in a row, with 14 kills and 12 digs, while hitting .267. Renee Rheinecker had 13 kills, while Elin Skei dished out 40 assists and Kari Hammerbacher had 10 digs. In the Lions' second match of the day, Southern ran into a hot hitting Abilene Christian (13-5) squad that hit .361 in the first set en route to a 3-0 win. Individual set scores were 14-25, 20-25, 24-26. Feldmann had nine kills and six digs in the match, while Brittany Vavao-Huggins added four kills and eight digs. Skei dished out 19 assists. Southern will be back in action tomorrow as the Lions face off with Dallas Baptist at 9:30 am and Texas A&M Commerce at 2 pm. |
