Lions split final two matches at Pitt State Classic

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team defeated Dallas Baptist three sets to one in the first match of the day, but fell in three sets to Texas A&M Commerce in the day's finale at the Pittsburg State Classic.

Southern (9-8) won the first two sets against Dallas Baptist and despite a hiccup in the third set, convincingly won in the fourth set. Individual scores were 26-24, 25-15, 21-25, and 25-17.

The Lions hit .255 as a team in the match against the Patriots and had three players finish with double-figure kills, led by 16 from Renee Rheinecker. Rheinecker hit .343, while Ashlee Russell and Jeanna Feldmann had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Elin Skei had 52 assists and Kari Hammerbacher had a match high 21 digs.

In the Lions second match of the day, Southern hung tough in each set, but hitting woes led to a 3-0 loss. Individual set scores were 22-25, 21-25, and 23-25.

After hitting .281 in the first set, Southern hit  just .045 and .051 in the final two sets. Russell led the Lions attack with a .292 average and 11 kills, while Rheinecker added nine kills. Skei had 27 assists, while Hammerbacher had a match-high 24 digs.

The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday, October 6 when they travel to sixth ranked Washburn for a 7 pm match.
