FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Topeka, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team took the opening set tonight at seventh ranked Washburn, but the Lady Blues rebounded to win the final three and defeat the Lions three sets to one in MIAA action. Individual set scores were 25-21, 16-25, 22-25 and 22-25. Southern (9-9, 2-3 MIAA) trailed for a good part of the first set, including falling behind 17-13 after an attack error from Brittany Vavao-Huggins gave Washburn (20-2, 4-2 MIAA) a four-point advantage, forcing a Lions timeout. From that point, however, the Lions rolled off six points in a row to go up 19-17. Southern outscored Washburn 12-4 to end the first set. The Lady Blues hit .448 as a team in the second set to win easily and held on to take the third and fourth sets in succession. Renee Rheinecker led the Lions' offensive attack with 14 kills and a .333 attack average. Ashlee Russell had 13 kills, hit .333 and added nine digs and five blocks. Huggins added eight kills and seven blocks, while Elin Skei dished out 46 assists and Kari Hammerbacher had 13 digs. The Lions will be back in action this Friday night when Southern plays host to Fort Hays at 7 pm in Young Gym. |
