Lions swept by eighth ranked Emporia State, 3-0

Joplin, Mo. -- The visiting eighth ranked Emporia State Hornets were dominant in every facet of the match tonight, hitting .421 as a team and swept Missouri Southern three sets to none today in Joplin. Individual set scores were 15-25, 18-25, and 15-25.

Southern (10-10, 3-4 MIAA) led early (3-2) after an Emporia (19-2, 6-1 MIAA) hitting error and got as close as 8-7 after a kill from Brittany Vavao-Huggins. Emporia, however the Hornet lead reached 15-8 forcing a Southern timeout. Emporia closed the match 15-7 run.

Southern led 12-8 to start the second set after a kill from Renee Rheinecker and again at 14-11 after an ESU error, but the Hornets went on a 10-1 run to lead 21-15, before a kill from Jeanna Feldman stopped the run.

Emporia led from start to finish in the final set.

Feldmann had 10 kills and six digs to lead the Lions, while Elin Skei and Daphne Merrick had 20 and 12 assists, respectively. Kari Hammerbacher had a team-high seven digs.

The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday, October 14 when they travel to Pittsburg State for a 7 pm match.
