Lions take down 16th ranked Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2

Box Score

Omaha, Neb. -- For the second time this season the Missouri Southern volleyball team has taken out a ranked opponent on the road as the Lions defeated 16th ranked Nebraska-Omaha tonight three sets to two. Individual set scores were 17-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25, 16 and 16-14.

Southern (11-14, 4-7 MIAA) defeated their second ranked opponent on the road this season as the Lions also beat then 20th ranked Truman State last month.

The Lions and Omaha (17-7, 7-4 MIAA) traded sets throughout the first four frames, but the Mavericks never trailed in the first set. The second set was tied once and the lead changed hands once more with the Lions coming out on top after scoring five of the final eight points.

Southern had an early 5-4 lead in the third set after a kill from Renee Rheinecker, before kills from the Mavs' Emily Meyers and Sara Kampschneider gave UNO a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Omaha would go on an 11-5 run to end the set.

The Lions returned the favor in the fourth set and after taking a 13-12 lead on a UNO service error, Southern closed the set on a 12-4 run to end the set.

Southern led 8-7 at the turn as neither team led by more than a point through the first 15 points. The set featured 14 tied scores and eight lead changes, but a kill from Rheinecker and an ace from Elin Skei gave the Lions a 16-14 win and the match.

Rheinecker had a career-high 21 kills on the night and added seven digs. Skei had 45 assists and eight digs, while Jeanna Feldmann had 14 kills and 14 digs. Kari Hammerbacher and Stefanie Williams had 16 and 10 digs, respectively, while Maria Weller added seven kills.

Southern will be back in action this Friday, October 23 when the Lions play host to fourth ranked Central Missouri at 7 pm in Young Gym.
