Ninth ranked Washburn Sweeps Southern

Joplin, Mo. -- Ninth ranked Washburn University hit .394 as a team and swept the Missouri Southern volleyball team three sets to none tonight in Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 13-25, 24-26 and 18-25.

Southern (12-17, 5-10 MIAA) trailed all of the first set as the Lady Blues (28-4, 12-4 MIAA) hit .545 in the opening frame.

The Lions hung around in the second set and led 11-10 after a Washburn attack error. The Lady Blues had a 23-19 lead late in the set, but the Lions scored four of the next five points to force extra time. Washburn scored the set's final two points to take the set.

Southern led 2-1 in the final set, but Washburn went on a 7-2 run to take an 8-3 lead and forced a Missouri Southern timeout. The Lions cut the deficit to 15-10 after a kill from Amelia Judge, but the lead was soon 23-15 after a kill from the Lady Blues' Mollie Lacy.

Renee Rheinecker led the Lions with 11 kills and hit .304 in the match, while Jeanna Feldman had seven of her own. Maria Weller and Brittany Vavao-Huggins had six kills each, while Stefanie Williams had a team-high 10 digs. Elin Skei had 23 assists and five digs.

The Lions will be back in action this weekend as Southern travels to Fort Hays on Friday and to Emporia State on Saturday.
