FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team led just once in the match tonight at seventh ranked Emporia State tonight, falling three sets to none to the Hornets in White Auditorium. Individual set scores were 19-25, 13-25 and 18-25. The Lions (13-18, 6-11 MIAA) ran into a hot-hitting Emporia State (27-4, 14-3) squad as the Hornets hit .336 as a team. Southern trailed 9-7 early on in the first set, but ESU went on a 16-12 run to end the set. In the second frame, the Lions trailed by the same 9-7 margin, but the Hornets shut down Southern and closed the set on a 16-6 run. The Lions led 4-3 early in the third set after a kill from Brittany Vavao-Huggins and trailed 13-11 after a block from Jeanna Feldmann and Amber Heiskell, but the Hornets closed the match on a 12-7 run. Renee Rheinecker led the Lions' attack with eight kills, while Daphne Merrick had five kills, 26 assists and seven digs. Feldmann and Huggins had seven and five kills, respectively, while Kari Hammerbacher and Ali Boehler had ten digs each. The Lions come back home this Wednesday night as they play host to Pittsburg State at 7 pm in Young Gym. |
