Lions have best ever showing at ITA Regional Tennis Tourney

The Missouri Southern No. 1 doubles team of senior Sheryl Posch and junior Lacey McMunn capped off the Lions' best ever showing at the ITA Regional Tournament on Sunday by advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.

The tournament, played in Maryville, Mo., consisted of 11 schools from around the region including MSSU, Northwest Missouri State, Southwest Baptist, Washburn, Emporia, Truman, Winona State, Metro State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Fort Hays State and Northern Colorado. In all, there were 62 singles players entered.

The doubles tandem of Posch and McMunn, after a first-round bye, picked up an 8-3 victory over Meredith Krystofik and Julie McPherson, of Northern Colorado. Posch and McMunn then downed Washburn's Caitlin Day and Julie Huybrechets, 8-4, before falling to Jessica and Rebecca Meares, of Metro State, 1-8. The Metro State doubles team was the top-seeded team in the tourney.

Also in doubles action, freshman Kristen Meschede and senior Amy Stredney advanced to the quarterfinals, with an 8-5 victory over Amber Bettis/Kindi Vaughn, of CSU, and an 8-4 win over Abby Souders and Kristine Garjo, of Truman.

Singles play saw Posch and Kim McMunn advance to quarterfinals as well. Both posted 2-1 records. Kim McMunn was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Charlotte Heidelberg, Southwest Baptist's new No. 1 singles player.

Stredney, in singles action, won her consolation bracket with three victories. She finished 3-1 on the weekend.

The tournament in Maryville concluded the fall schedule for the MSSU tennis team, which resumes play in the spring.
