Southern goes 4-2 at MIAA Fall Doubles tourney

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Missouri Southern went 4-2 on Saturday in doubles matches with every team in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Southern defeated Missouri Western, Washburn, Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State at the MIAA Doubles Tournament. Truman and Southwest Baptist were the squads to defeat the Lions.

"This tournament is one that does not count on our records," said MSSU assistant tennis coach Sheryl Posch. "It is a fun tournament where every one gets to know each other and see who the new players are. Our team did very well for their first matches. We used this tournament to experiment with different doubles teams and ended up finding some good combinations."

The Southern doubles squad of senior Lacey McMunn (Parsons, Kan.) and sophomore Kristen Meschede (Grain Valley, Mo.) went 2-0. Meschede also teamed up with sophomore Barb Gombosi (Maribor, Slovenia) to go 2-0. As a whole, MSSU won 11 doubles matches while dropping only seven.

The next matches of the fall will count on MSSU records. Southern plays at Bolivar, Mo. against Southwest Baptist in a non-conference match on Sept. 11. Also on the 11th, the Lions face off with Drury at Bolivar.
