Lions fall 6-3 at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Missouri Southern's women's tennis team dropped to 1-3 on the season Tuesday (March 7) with a 6-3 loss in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener at Southwest Baptist.

The Lions opened with one win in doubles as the No. 1 tandem of Barb Gombosi and Michelle Hall knocked off SBU's Valerie Jones and Chelsea Janzen. But Southern couldn't get any more doubles wins and posted just two in singles play.

"SBU is a tough team this year and the match could have gone either way," said coach Sheryl Posch. "We had some really close matches and just couldn't close them out."

Singles victories for the Lions went to Gombosi, 6-1, 6-1, over Janzen at No. 2 and Kim McMunn, 6-2, 6-2, over Lauren Hodson at No. 4.

The Lions are scheduled to resume play on Thursday (March 9) at Emporia State. They then face off with Cameron (Okla.) on Friday and Drury on Saturday in Springfield, Mo. Sunday the Lions play at home against Nebraska-Kearney.
