Lions ousted in Sweet 16

KANSAS CITY, Mo.   Ninth-ranked Northwood shut out Missouri Southern, 5-0, in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Women s Tennis Championship at the Plaza Tennis Center. Northwood, now 19-1, advances to Thursday s quarterfinals to face No. 3 ranked West Florida.

Northwood earned all three doubles points to take a 3-0 lead, then closed out the match with two singles victories. The Timberwolves  top doubles duo of Carolin Rosskothen and Julia Goncalves opened the doubles by defeating Missouri Southern s Michelle Halle and Barb Gombosi, 8-5. Sue Rossano and Desiree Roset picked up the second point with an 8-0 whitewash, while Cristina Oliveira and Nicole Kromer added the third point with an 8-2 triumph.

Goncalves downed Missouri Southern s Ashton Lawrence in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, with Oliviera clinched the match for Northwood with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Kasey Adams.

Missouri Southern concluded the season with a 13-8 record.
