Lions drop conference tournament duals to Southwest Baptist, Fort Hays State

The Missouri Southern Lions dropped both duals at the MIAA Conference Tournament this weekend, losing 5-1 to Southwest Baptist University and 5-3 to Fort Hays State in St. Joseph.

The Lions started the day with No. 5 seed SBU. SBU defeated the 4th seeded Lions in all three doubles matches to start the dual. Southern's Michelle Hall ran her record this year to 12-3 as she defeated the Bearcats' Jolee Cook 6-3, 6-7 and 6-3. The Lions, however would go on to drop the next two singles matches and fall to SBU, 5-1.

In Southern's second dual of the day, they faced off with 8th seeded Fort Hays State. Brittany Kockler and Ashton Lawrence won their doubles match in the No. 2 position defeating Rebekah Lynn and Helen Harris, 9-8.

Going into singles play, the Lions trailed 2-1, but Hall would tie the dual up, winning her 13th singles match of the season, and defeating Mary Anne Talbott, 6-1, 6-1. Kristen Meschede put the Lions up 3-2 with a win over Harris, 6-2, 6-0, but the Lady Tigers won the next three singles matches to take the dual 5-3.

Southern finishes the regular season with a 5-10 record. The Lions entered the conference tournament ranked seventh in the North Central NCAA Rankings, but will wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
